Sono Arrivato

Gosh I'm here! Jet-lagging and molto tired, but I'm here.

There were some ups and downs on the way... upon arrival at the airport I discover that the flight's been overbooked, heavily. So I look into the volunteering thing, and accept their proposition: take the same itinerary, Minneapolis-Amsterdam-Bologna, at the same times just one day later, and receive a $750 travel voucher. Since I have that kind of flexibility (I have keys to two houses, after all), I end up feeling pretty pleased with myself, and leisurely stroll the airport/mall waiting to get my boarding passes.
Then, last minute, second even, the personnel at the desk spot me and frantically have me board the flight, claiming they "need me" on it. Aren't I special? It was crazy, the airplane door was actually down and had to be opened back up for me... besides worries of having my connecting flight re-scheduled, the faint spectre of disappointment soon set in (I had already jumped to thinking what I'd do with the free trip!).
But I recover quick, and soon fell to chatting with the accountant lady next to me who was off to Russia. Did you know that Cargill is the largest private-owned corporation in the world? You're right, you're right, who doesn't know that?
All in all I arrived here in Bologna without major incident. I will say that I'm surprised at how accustomed I've become to this sort of thing. Especially regarding Italy, the fact that I was here just some 6 months ago has removed much of the glamour and exotification- which in and of itself delights me.
The next step may prove tiring: I missed the 13:05 bus and have to take the 17:05 out to the town of Quinzano, which is near Monterenzio, the dig site. But on Sundays the bus skips my stop, so I have to get off earlier, and then walk some 15 minutes up hilly terrain in the countryside. Non c'e problema.
That should bring us up to date I think. This evening may hold altogether different kinds of adventures; perhaps some friends to greet me? Above all I'll appreciate a place to crash out and sleep. Soon, so very soon...

p.s. mmm, sleeep.

Hiya Meg,
Thanks for the love!
And for the tip too, it was easy and painless to do, and a downright good idea. -Nic
