Week Twain - Keepin' On
Hi there.
Indeed, the second week of six is passed, and here I am. The big news of the week is the uncovering of the season's first tomb. Yep, right in line with graves from previous seasons the bosses found the tell-tale signs that indicate what lies below. What can I say about it, let's see... the skeleton is in fairly good condition, as is the skull, which shows an impressive set of teeth, seemingly whole and undamaged. This was a Celtic man given a warrior's burial, with weapons laid at his side, and the usual grave gifts of pottery, some 10-11 bowls, a strigil and a couple other items. Quite routine for this site (it's a necropolis after all), but the first time I've seen anything like it. The last couple nights, then, folks have had to stay at the site overnight, so as to discourage intruders. I hope the tomb's inhabitant would have felt honored. It's really striking to look down and think that this fellow's been covered up for some 2400 years, and now, once again, he's of great importance.
Hmm, what else, what else. Last Sunday a few of us took a day-trip to the Monterenzio swimming pool/water park- very much fun, though I felt the pain of sunburn on my lower back for a few days after. So far, no peeling. The weather's stayed superhot, though yesterday we were granted a half-day by an insistent downpour. For me the best would be to have some clouds for shaded working weather, as so far the sun has been very clever at avoiding them.
For those who are staying for 3 weeks, the last week is coming up, so I'm glad that I'll be around longer. I've been getting very weary towards the end of the last couple days, but I think that a mellowed-out Sunday will do me lotsa good towards preparing for another work-week. When I think that at my last dig at Aunou we only had Sundays off! And the work here is far more interesting, even if in my sector we've just been removing topsoil. I think I may have missed out regarding the tomb found this week, but I really did feel that those who would be here for a shorter time should get priority. With any luck there'll be more grave-digging coming up.
Well, bye for now.

You regular grave-robber, you! Very cool. See if you can break one of the bones and eat the marrow - it'll give you strength. Actually, I really doubt any edible marrow remains. But still, it's a Celtic warrior - it's worth a try.
Ah, Traveling Bear. Good times. Zebra never could quite compete. Intriguingly, one of my tentmates (separate rooms! Don't be gettin' no ideas!) also has a stuffed bear. Since it's an uncommon habit for a male (in the military besides), I'd wager it's a Traveling Bear, too. I'll ask him about it.
Keepin' it real in undisclosed location!!

Bricht...
Stories of obaidh. And by his side lay the Llyvran Seryddiaeth. How did they lay him in.. aiet? deas? iar? or, tuath? Peace be with him as he now faces the open sky. As for the sun, you must study the art of neladoracht. As you sit by his side through the long night may you experience tagbairm. The warrior shall live on.
